Meet The Team

Samantha Cetrulo

What I hope to achieve with this project is providing a humanistin, hollistic perspective on the issue of female empowerment. The term feminism can be isolating to women, and often times has a negative connotation when it is used to desribe womens liberation and equality of the sexes. Not only will this project give women the choice to define empowerment for themselves, but also provide people of all genders with a new perspective and understanding of how perceptions of  "acceptable" and "unacceptable" female expression are jaded. I have learned so much from the people I've had the opportunity to meet and talk with while putting this project together, and I hope we provided stories and information that have an influence on our audience as well!

The roles women play in society have drastically changed. “Girl power” is at an ultimate high, especially in today's modern culture. I believe in female empowerment. The means in which empowerment is achieved for females are often portrayed negatively, therefore undermining the cause. It's important to examine the true intentions of women participating in the sex industry as a form of liberation. This project has deepened my understanding of defining feminism and the misconceptions often assumed. Female empowerment comes in all forms depending on the individual. ICEmpowerMe displays a wide spectrum of how women of our generation feel empowered and make sense of their identity.

I was interested in this project originally because I feel that as a young woman in my society, I should be more aware of how I represent myself to that society. After working on this project though, I realized that I should actually be more aware of how I represent myself, not for society, but for myself . I found that whatever I do to empower myself is beneficial for me, despite what anybody else may think. Empowerment is personal and varies from person to person, and so if something makes me feel confident and makes me feel like a stronger, better person, then I should be doing that thing. I now have a more broad perspective and greater acceptance of how all women display themselves differently by thinking on an individual level rather than a “this way is right and this way is wrong” level.

As females, we are told sexy is definite. It is perfect curves, flirtatious personalities and always showing just enough skin. This "perfect" image is imprinted onto the minds of young females through everyday influences. We are made to believe there is a specific standard when, in fact, this standard is obsolete. Women cannot be told when they should feel sexy. A women feels sexy whenshe feels her best. This project is a testimony to this female empowerment. Society may tell us one thing but we are independent of this notion, we are powerful. And when our confidence is realized, we are unstoppable.
